British Universities Summer School Program

For almost half a century, the English-Speaking Union of the United States through the generosity of participating Branches has offered fellowships for talented teachers to study over the summer in the U.K.   Over 1600 teachers have benefited from this exciting opportunity and returned inspired to share their knowledge with their students.

Please know that your work literally changes lives. The tools with which you provide teachers possess amazing power to captivate students and to encourage them to take chances and to drop their defenses in ways they never before felt possible. . . when my friends asked me how my time at The Globe went, I only need to point to how 50 kids are now “Living Shakespeare.”

-- Todd Benware, Syracuse NY * (Read complete text of Todd's letter here)

Last summer a total of 50 fellows participated in the BUSS program through the generosity of the 29 Branches financing these teachers.  The impact of study with distinguished lecturers and students from around the world is immeasurable. Many Branches have found this to be a wonderful complement to their Shakespeare Competition, providing an invaluable opportunity for the teachers to study abroad.

BUSS fellows have the opportunity to perform on the stage of the Globe Theatre during Teaching Shakespeare in Performance, presented by the International Shakespeare Globe Centre. The University of Oxford offers a variety of English Literature courses, as well as courses in Creative Writing and History, Politics and Society. Scottish Universities International Summer School (SUISS) program, based in Edinburgh , offers Literature in Twentieth-Century Britain and Creative Writing. Edinburgh is a vibrant international center of culture and learning, home to the largest Arts Festival in the world during the month of August.

Program brochures will be sent from National Headquarters to participating Branches in early January 2009. For summer program dates and course descriptions, please download the BUSS Brochure 2009 below or consult the following websites for more detailed information as it becomes available:

Edinburgh : www.llc.ed.ac.uk/suiss

Please contact your local ESU Branch to see if they will be participating in 2009 and their fellowship application procedures and deadlines. If your Branch awards you a BUSS fellowship, you will then need to complete the UK institution’s application and send to The English-Speaking Union’s National Headquarters by Wednesday, March 4, 2009.

Winners are notified directly by the British institution in mid-April of their acceptance.
