The English-Speaking Union’s World Members’ Conference, hosted by The English-Speaking Union of the United States, was held over five days from October 6 – 10, 2004 in New York City. The Conference was a great success; it was an unparalleled opportunity for delegates from 24 ESU nations, including members from 48 Branches of the ESU US, to share ideas, form friendships, and make plans for new programming initiatives.
Delegates enjoyed thoughtful speeches and panel discussions, events at the United Nations, Ellis Island, the Yale Club, and the New York Public Libarary, and stimulating discussions with fellow delegates. A member of the Memphis ( Tennessee ) Branch, wrote, “Where else would I converse (in English, of course) with denizens from Russia, Korea, Mongolia and Yemen? Now my new ‘best friend’ is a charming, aristocratic sheik from Yemen.”
The English-Speaking Unions of the world will ride a wave of momentum from the World Members’ Conference for some time to come, and will look back on the Conference as a seminal event in forging closer international ties and advancing our mission to Create Global Understanding Through English.
