Although The English-Speaking Union remains committed to the benefits of the Junior Year Abroad Luard Scholarship for the long term, due to current financial restrictions, in 2009 we will not award this year-long program, but instead a Luard Summer Scholarship to the ESU’s Annual International Relations Conference at Oxford University .
In keeping with the spirit of the upcoming 40th Anniversary Celebration, the Luard Scholarship Committee unanimously decided to give back to the community that has worked so hard to select truly outstanding Luard Scholarship candidates in the past by awarding a scholarship to attend the conference to one of the dedicated administrators from our partner institutions.
In its 41st year, this one week conference deals with a variety of issues relating to both international relations and to Britain ’s international role in the world today. The aim of the Conference is to give participants the opportunity to expand their knowledge of Britain and to widen their outlook on world issues. It also offers a unique opportunity to make individual contacts with people from various fields, cultures and backgrounds. In 2007, 34 delegates attended representing a total of 30 countries in the fields of trade and industry, law, journalism, teaching and the diplomatic. The venue has traditionally been one of the colleges in Oxford and for the past 15 years, it has been held at Oriel College, Oxford .
The ESU Scholarship includes international air, travel costs to and from Oxford, accommodations, meals, lectures, receptions and visits during the 1 week conference.
Last year the dates of the program were Sunday July 27th to Saturday, August 2nd. The deadline for receipt of applications was April 18th. Details of this year’s scholarship and application procedure and deadlines will be provided by The English-Speaking Union in London by February 1, 2009. Please check back at that time.
All current freshmen should check our website in September 2009 for the application procedure and deadlines for the 2010-11 Luard Junior Year Abroad Scholarship.
