Sean Mickens, Luard Scholar 2007-2008, recently returned from his Luard Scholarship junior year abroad at London School of Economics and will be finishing his senior year at Howard University working on his senior thesis “Muslim Relations in Western European Countries.” Sean is also a member of the Institute for Responsible Citizenship through which he interned in Washington, DC, took classes at Georgetown University, and met with a variety of politicians. He returned to the Institute this summer, and is interning at the Polaris Project, an organization that works to serve U.S. citizens and foreign national victims of human trafficking.

Letter to Alumni from Duane L. Hughes, Luard Scholar 1984-1985

 Dear fellow Luard Alum,

I have the good fortune of reaching out to other Luard alum, and no matter where they spent their Junior Year abroad or what they are doing now; they all express strong reflective emotions about the transformational nature of the experience. The ESU Luard Scholarship came to them, they say, at a pivotal time in their lives, propelling them to new levels of maturity, with English soil underfoot and the European continent at the doorstep. Fellow alumni reminisce about the joy of meeting the intellectual challenge as well as the intrinsic value of the overseas travel opportunities. In order to share our experience and endow this scholarship for generations to come, we have formed the ESU Luard Alumni Committee, which I chair.

As you know, the ESU Luard Scholarships presented by The English-Speaking Union of the United States (ESU) are merit awards offered to top students attending United Negro College Fund institutions, Hampton University, or Howard University. Since 1969 the ESU has made this opportunity available to 68 scholars.

The ESU Luard Alumni Association intends to conduct monthly calls to Luard Alumni, initiating a spiritual connection through shared stories to relive the experience and to brainstorm different ways to get involved. (ie. 40th anniversary event, fundraising, ambassadorship, advocate for the ESU Luard Scholarship)

I hope you will take this occasion to celebrate the past and ensure the future of Luard by becoming an ESU Luard Alumni Member today. Please contact me or Seekqumarie Kellman (Skellman@esuus.org) for more details.

Best regards,

Duane L. Hughes, ESU Luard Scholar 1984-1985
