ENGLISH IN ACTION

This program helps newcomers to the States gain fluency and confidence in conversational English by pairing them with volunteer tutors for weekly conversation sessions. In addition to practicing the language without the fear of making mistakes, EiA students from more than 50 countries around the world learn about life in this country and teach their American partners about their own lands and customs.

Every year, approximately 800 students and volunteer tutors are paired in the one-to-one program in New York City. There are additional EiA programs in the Central Pennsylvania, Lexington (VA), New Orleans, Palm Beach, Portland and Seattle Branches.

English in Action Volunteers

English in Action (EiA) is always looking for friendly new tutors for the program.

Volunteers need no formal training, just an interest in other languages and cultures and the willingness to befriend a newcomer.

EiA may mean the beginning of a lifelong interest in a particular area of the world, or it may lead to a deeper understanding of one’s own culture.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer tutor in New York City, please contact the EiA Manager at 212-818-1200 or email eia@esuus.org to schedule an appointment.

“For my part, few experiences have given me greater satisfaction. . . . I was enormously enriched by what I learned of my student’s culture.” –a volunteer
